Nashoba Valley Medical Center Awarded Top Hospital Distinction for Quality and Safety by the Leapfrog Group

The Leapfrog Group named Nashoba Valley Medical Center, a part of the Steward Health Care System, to its annual list of Top Hospitals. An elite distinction awarded to hospitals nationwide for demonstrating excellence in hospital safety and quality through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Leapfrog Top Hospital distinction is awarded to less than seven percent of all eligible hospitals. The awards, which are given annually, were announced at Leapfrog’s Annual Meeting and Top Hospital Awards on Dec. 2, in Washington, D.C.

“We are proud to be among the highest-performing Top Hospitals across the country and it proves our commitment of providing safe, high quality care for our patients is working,” said Salvatore Perla, president of Nashoba Valley Medical Center. “This is a great honor to our physicians, nurses, and staff who carry out our safety and quality initiatives on a daily basis.”

Nashoba Valley Medical Center was one of only 94 hospitals across the country to be selected as a Top Hospital. The selection is based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care, including how patients fare, resource use, and management structures in place to prevent errors. Hospitals reaching this achievement include academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals, and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban settings.

“Leapfrog’s Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most prestigious distinctions any hospital can achieve in the United States,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “By achieving Top Hospital status, Nashoba Valley Medical Center has proven it’s a premier institution and deserves to be recognized for its dedication to the families and patients in Ayer and the surrounding communities.”

The Top Hospital award is not given to a set number of hospitals, but rather, to all urban, rural and children's hospitals that meet the high standards defined in each year’s Top Hospitals Methodology. Nashoba Valley Medical Center was also awarded a third consecutive “A” grade in the Fall 2014 update to the Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by Leapfrog.
