Nashoba Valley Medical Center’s Newly Expanded Garvin Center for Geriatric Psychiatry Offers Patients a Safe and Comfortable Inpatient Setting

Only Inpatient Behavioral Health Program in the Nashoba Valley Region for Patients Over Age 55

Nashoba Valley Medical Center (NVMC) recently expanded the Garvin Center for Geriatric Psychiatry, which offers inpatient behavioral health services for patients over age 55, and is located within the hospital campus at 200 Groton Road in Ayer. At a time when many other hospital providers across the state have reduced their behavioral health service offerings, NVMC and Steward Health Care are expanding access to more people.

The center’s expansion includes 20 patient rooms; an increase from the original 16 beds. In addition to the new patient rooms, an activities room was expanded and renovated along with several administrative offices.

“The Garvin Center for Geriatric Psychiatry is making a huge difference within the community and now we are able to care for more patients close to home; keeping them near their loved ones,” said Salvatore Perla, president of Nashoba Valley Medical Center. “With this expansion, we are achieving our mission to provide these patients with the best possible care in the best possible setting.”

In conjunction with New England Geriatrics, the center’s team of dedicated geriatric medical professionals provides psychiatric services to geriatric patients who may suffer from a variety of conditions with the goal of restoring mental health, functional abilities, and overall well-being. The full array of services offered include diagnostic assessment, behavior management consultations, dementia evaluation, psychopharmacological consultation, depression screening, neuropsychological testing, family consultation and therapy, and innovative therapies such as art, music, aroma, reminiscence, light and hydrotherapies, along with occupational, physical, and speech therapies.
